Who We Are
Barnes Global Trade, LLC is a wholly-owned customs brokerage and consulting group of Barnes, Richardson & Colburn, LLP, a law firm practicing exclusively in the areas of customs, export controls, and international trade law. We formed BGT to provide non-legal services that will help our clients maximize the value of their supply chains through duty drawback, free trade agreements, import compliance, and export controls compliance.
Our Services
We provide consulting and customs brokerage services aimed at identifying and realizing efficiencies and cost savings for importers and exporters in their global supply chains. We also perform import and export compliance reviews and compliance training. Training can be done on-site or remotely depending on each client’s needs and efficiency.
Drawback Services
BGT is a licensed and permitted customs broker specializing in duty drawback. Drawback is the refund of duties and certain fees paid on imported goods when those goods are exported or destroyed. Government data shows that as much as $3 billion in drawback duty refunds go unclaimed every year. BGT can obtain the permissions required for your company to establish a drawback program, collect and store the necessary documents, compile the drawback database, create, and file all drawback claims, prepare a drawback manual as required by Customs & Border Protection, and assist in any CBP audits or inquiries.
Compliance Reviews
We assist companies by identifying global trade opportunities, conducting compliance reviews and drafting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable trade laws and regulations. Examples of BGT compliance services include compiling classification databases for imports, determining export classifications and restrictions on exports, analyzing eligibility for duty preferences under free trade agreements, assessing feasibility for operating in a Foreign Trade Zone, and filing for necessary permissions and approvals.
When necessary, we can work closely with BRC to address issues that are more appropriately handled by a law firm.
Facilitating Global Trade
BGT assists importers and exporters seeking and retaining membership in programs designed to speed the clearance of goods. We also help importers and exporters maintain excellent relations with government agencies.
Examples in the U.S. include Importer Self Assessment (ISA), Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT) and Trusted Trader.
BGT can also assist importers with entry reconciliation under the ACS Reconciliation Prototype.
Training
BGT offers a variety of options for training, including individualized on-site training, individualized web-based training and generalized web-based training.
Our training covers a full range of topics including import compliance, export controls compliance, tariff classification, customs valuation, free trade agreements such as NAFTA, and country of origin marking. We can provide certificates of achievement for successful completion of a program.
General Economic Research and Analysis
BGT can create databases, reports, and graphics representing your company’s trade and production-sharing operations and the global trade patterns of entire industries. We do this from data supplied by the U.S. and foreign governments and non-governmental sources.
BGT can analyze and create presentations of these data to support your company’s in-house compliance, strategic or marketing efforts.
We can also assist your firm with all the economic research and analysis you need for compelling applications, petitions, briefs, and testimony before various U.S. government agencies and Congress, including: antidumping/countervailing duty investigations and reviews, position papers on the impact of trade agreements, tariff bills, GSP petitions and waivers of competitive need limits, FTZ applications, etc. BGT can provide expert economic testimony in proceedings before the International Trade Commission, United States Trade Representative, and other agencies.
